Dr. Patil's Medical Mission Trip with Extra Mile Pediatrics

April 2023

Dr. Patil has been given the amazing opportunity to travel to El Salvador with Extra Mile Pediatrics to aid in the establishment of a dental program for the surrounding communities. She is traveling to various small villages to share knowledge regarding healthy oral behaviors and to determine the current oral needs of the young children in the community. We're excited to share with you all the progress of her journey!

Extra Mile's Mission

Extra Mile Pediatrics is a medical mission organization committed to providing repeated, quality care for children in areas where significant barriers to care exist.

Dr. Patil's Travel Log

Day 0: Preparation & Traveling

Every journey requires proper preparation, and a medical mission trip is no exception! Dr. Patil stocked up on the necessary supplies to ensure a successful trip.

Later that day, she woke up at midnight to make her 2:30am flight. Here's the rare sight of an empty SFO! When she arrived at El Salvador they found out only one checked in bag arrived, but fortunately they had their medical supplies needed for Clinic Day 1 with them.

That night, Mahendra (Dr. Patil's husband) taught the rest of the team how to use the new software that he designed for the mission trip.

Clinic Day 1: San Diego

The first stop was in San Diego. With the aid of their talented interpreters, Dr. Patil and the rest of the team educated the locals on proper oral hygiene and empowered them to deliver care to the rest of their community.

Clinic Day 2

After driving through the mountains and around some cows, Dr. Patil and her team met up with some dental students at the local dental clinic. The small clinic comprising of only one dental dental chair and a cabinet of supplies serves 3000 patients each year. It was another rewarding day teaching the children healthy dental habits!

Clinic Day 3

Another successful day giving quality dental care and spreading knowledge to the local community!

Clinic Day 4

Dr. Patil got to soak at the beautiful beach before hearing a sermon from the local pastor and working at the clinic. At the clinic, she gave a solution to an anterior cross bite and took a look at a case of over-retained ankylosed primary teeth.

Clinic Day 5

After a delicious pancake breakfast, Dr. Patil and the team spend another great day at the clinic administering dental care. It was heartwarming to see members of the community learn better oral hygiene habits alongside their family members. During Clinic Day 5, Dr. Patil addressed cases of decay and abscess, and shared knowledge that would prevent this from happening.

The team ended the day watching the beautiful sunset and cooling off with chilled coconuts.
